How to Handle Property Line Disputes

Posted September 3, 2016

It has been said that good fences make good neighbors. But what happens in the event that boundaries are not clear or worse yet, are not respected by your neighbor? Property line (or boundary) disputes can quickly devolve into emotionally charged situations causing you to draw the shades and hunker down. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Confirm Your Property Line

Before approaching your neighbor about the issue, be sure you have a clear and accurate understanding of the location of the common property line. For starters, locate and review your survey.  If your corners are marked, locate the markers.

Have a Conversation

A little diplomacy can go a long way. Remember that you have to live next door to your neighbors.  Ask your neighbor to produce their survey.  Do not let your temper get out of control.

If emotions run high or your neighbor is unwilling to resolve the dispute, it may be time to seek legal help.
